(ARRF is an acronym that stands for Anti-Religious Religious Fanaticism.) The only thing they have in common is language, and even that is superficial. America has more in common with Vietnam than England.”

After more than 30 years I have concluded that for Chinese people to apologize or admit to a transgression is almost impossible, because that would involve losing face, a concept that is of profound importance in Chinese culture. Most Americans are not aware of the concept and those who are naively compare it to losing an argument.

In this article http://lithub.com/gish-jen-on-the-profound-differences-between-chinese-and-american-culture/ Gish Jen’s discussion of her experience resonates with mine.

After kicking around the world’s oil fields for several decades another friend once said “Traveling narrows the mind. Everywhere you go people do the same things in different ways. They all think their way is the only right way, and they’re all wrong.” He also said “Almost everywhere you go you find a colony of Chinese, and every so often you find a Scot, always wandering around alone”.

It seems that forbearance and self-restraint must displace the notion of removing or altering cultural differences.
Rudyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03449122628917135438noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4284893230469697578.post-73206697846985924922017-07-17T00:11:20.425+07:002017-07-17T00:11:20.425+07:00I admit that I've always liked that song, and ...I admit that I've always liked that song, and did consider myself a progressive, although I'm not young anymore. I think I've confused what countries do with what they are. In the last year or so, since I've been reading your stuff and others, I've come to see things differently. The total hypocrisy of the "left" or progressives following Trump's win, has made it clear to me that some of my old ways of thinking have been missing something. I have found your writing and listening to your interviews very helpful.
