In Hell's Kitchen, on Amsterdam and Columbus on the Upper West Side, and Washington Heights. They're mostly gone now, but I remember Glass collection jars with "IRA" labels sitting prominently on the bar back in the 70's and 80's. Dark, urine-smelling places full of wood and apoplectic paddys (Irishmen, from where the word paddy-wagon derived) like your Pat. They were comfortable places to retreat in the heat of summer or cold winter of Manhattan. Their sons still roam Manhattan in blue uniforms, but today live on "Lon Giland" since only the animals (of the filthy rich) live in Manhattan now.

So, it was sad and nostalgic to read your account, as I lived most of my life there and now see it as a foreign and ugly place even, or especially, since it has been cleansed of pimps, whores, beggars and litter. On that thought may I recommend reading Samuel (Chip) Delany's " Times Square Red, Times Square Blue" for a brilliant, if intellectual and gay-themed exposition of what has been lost. I ate once with him at the Kiev on Avenue A with my late friend Bob Morales, writer of the Black Captain America series, who failed to explain to me who I was eating with." I can't go anywhere if my fundraising is not successful, and it's still a long way from that right now. It looks like I might have to write about the Philly suburbs for a while, though I'm still hopeful I'll be able to hit the road before too long.

It'd be interesting to see Portland again, and approach it within the context of my project. I'd also love to see Montana again, where I taught for four months.

LinhLinh Dinhhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00328959360983573810noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4284893230469697578.post-89308271655905077442014-05-06T12:12:23.574+07:002014-05-06T12:12:23.574+07:00Linh,

I never had to experience the whips and chains of global monopoly capitalism. But I rebelled against that world.

And now I see the evil everywhere. I tried living overseas, but it was bad there too. You definitely captured the desperation in such a place. Bloomberg was mayor for a reason - and it will only get worse with the false leftist, De Blasio…

Are you going to travel to the Pacific Northwest like you had planned? The most expensive part is the journey - but you will definitely find people that will help you out… You just gotta let them know that you are an artist. I lived in Portland for some years, so this works… Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
