US spying programs aimed at 'intimidation'

Iran's Press TV, 8/1/13:

The goal of the US government’s massive spying programs is not “public or national security but intimidation and blackmail,” says Linh Dinh, a political analyst and writer.

On Wednesday, British newspaper the Guardian reported that documents provided by American whistleblower Edward Snowden show the US National Security Agency is using a secret tool, called XKeyscore, to collect data on nearly all online activities of a typical Internet user with no prior authorization.

The documents describe the secret program as the “widest reaching” system which can gather intelligence from computer networks.

NSA employees are just required to fill out an on-screen form which is not reviewed by a court before targeting online activities of American citizens.

“After years of lying about its illegal spying programs, the US is only now reluctantly admitting to some of the charges made by Snowden, but despite of the tentative congressional investigation into this, there is very little outrage among the public that their government can and will listen to their phone calls or read their emails. After decades of being brainwashed by a relentless media, the American public is blasé and passive, so it is not pertubed over this, just as it is not perturbed over the fact that their government can arrest, torture or kill anyone, even American citizens, without charges. The big question over the NSA surveillance program is why? Why are they so eager to spy on their own citizens, and citizens of friendly countries? This can not be explained as part of the war on terrorism, which is bogus anyway. ” said Dinh in a phone interview with Press TV on Thursday.

He said the main goals of such massive spying programs are to intimidate political activists and dissidents and blackmail politicians.

“By knowing what everyone is up to, organized dissent can be snuffed out before it becomes a threat to the status quo, and by compiling files on all politicians and judges, the US can ensure that these public officials toe the line, because if they ever rock this Fascistic boat too aggressively, their private crimes, sins or transgressions can be exposed, Who has a mistress? Who’s a closet homosexual? Who’s a porn addict? Anything and everything can be used against you, because the government knows every little thing about you.” he said.
