Chinese restaurant attached to bus station--Miryang

Attached to the bus station, this is a Chinese restaurant from hell's basement. It serves garbage food at inflated prices, and my entree came without rice, incomprehensibly.

Since I couldn't speak Korean, I made the motion of shoveling rice into my mouth, but the woman simply ignored me and walked away. Suddenly remembering the Mandarin for "eat rice," I finally said "shin fan" to the cook, so he gave me a bowl, at 80 cents extra, plus a bowl of broth with bits of napa cabbage and egg, for another 80 cents. For what I paid at this dump, I could have happily stuffed myself at a much nicer Korean restaurant.

It was one of those days. Meaning to go to Jinju, I ended up in Miryang because I got on the wrong bus. When you try to do too much, and you're mentally tired, shit happens, but I still had a very productive day, so I'm happy.

When visiting a country, it's important that you see its second, third or fourth rate cities, for they will give you a much better glimpse into how ordinary people live.

Miryang is certainly old school. At the bus station, restrooms have squatting toilets. Walking through its alleys, I ran into old women sitting outside on old beds, enjoying the sun.

Korean Heroic Corps members ready to kill Japanese--Miryang

Five of the 13 founding members of the Korean Heroic Corps were from Miryang, so they're heavily commemorated here. This underground group assassinated Japanese officials and Korean collaborators with the Japanese. I'm not sure, though, why two of them are depicted here as having auburn hair...
