Wesley fought in Hue during the Tet Offensive. Spending 18 months in Vietnam altogether, he was even a tunnel rat for 3 months. Wes survived the war without any cut on his skin, just a bout of malaria. He overcame "the fear factor" by thinking of his father, "I always felt that he was with me, you know." Wesley's two brothers and sisters are all dead, thanks to decades of bad living that included drug and alcohol addictions, jail stints and, with the sister, even working as a street walker. Wesley, on the hand, has never been in trouble, and at age 66, is still working remodeling homes.

24-years-old, Steve has three kids with three different women. His oldest is a 8-year-old boy. Steve bought me a shot of Jameson, but tried to decline when I bought him a slug of Wild Turkey. He wasn't driving, but only taking the bus home. When I observed how friendly Youngstown seemed to be, Steve countered, "It's just this area, it's just this bar, the rest of it is ghetto!"
"There's a shooting, like, every night," added the bartender, Roxi.

This 64-year-old woman has a 62-year-old, gravely ill sister, so she came up from Florida to see her sibling, who lives just outside Youngstown. Seconds after she had gotten off the bus, however, some crazed woman started to scream at her, "Don't you call me no dirty black bitch! Fuck you! Don't you be fuckin' messin' with me!" On and on it went in that vein, so I approached the screamer, "She ain't calling you nothing. She's just an old woman. Chill!" And the screamer calmed down long enough until a security guard showed up to tell her to beat it. The old woman's taxi finally arrived. Before she took off, she said, "I get off the bus, get screamed at, and now I'm giving this strange man a hug!"
