Here in the states you don't see people sit so close. Even people who know each other! In my city the new bus stop benches being put up have bars that separate portions of the bench (each the size of the "average" ass?) I'm sure the main reason is to prevent people from laying down. But, the anti-social aspect is pretty clear.
