I remember back in the day when P.J. O'Rourke realized he was Conservative. Everywhere he traveled people wore American themed t-shirts, so clearly America was the light and the way. Good ole P.J. was a commie a subsidized, 1970s university, then as an adult he was a pull-up-the-ladder-consevative. I must have been in my late 20s when it dawned on me that PJ was all about PJ.
I haven't traveled enough to know if people wear the USA brand intentionally, or they are just happy to have any clothes at all.
I know Marshall McLuhan said something about writing being the highest form of imperialism.

The whole world is mesmerized by the USA. I've seen "USA," the American flag and American sayings or slogans the world over.
