Quick! Make a wish and I'll make one too - Happy New Year Linh!

Thanks, Martin. I went down to immigration yesterday to see if I could extend my visa. They told me to come back later, closer to my visa expiration date, but it's apparently no problem. I'll get three more months.

Windhoek is perhaps the most boring city I've ever visited, but it's fine. I have my Checkers and Food Lover's supermarkets, Wimpy burger, oriental grocer, Castle Beer and there's even a Thai restaurant I haven't tried.

Though I may not stay here six months, it's good to know I can linger.

In Cairo, for example, the compulsion to run outside was constant, there was so much happening on the streets. Here, I can relax and write.

Hi Linh

Went out and celebrated the new year in the tiny metropolis of Chiang Rai Thailand(a military dictatorship). Every expat I talked to(German, English, Australian, Irish) all were glad to to be here, and shuddered at the idea of being back in their respective liberal democracies.

Linh, these days, boring is good. I wish I was in a more boring place. Happy New Year.

"Liberal democracies" are becoming prisons. Now Canada (or at least Quebec) with 90% vaxxed and a majority of them "boosted" (Canadians are very compliant), is joining the "Lockdown 2022" club where most of Europe already is. Nightly curfews and restrictions to meet anyone outside of your own family. If you don't have a family, tough luck. Fines up to 6,000 dollars. School is online again. Cinemas, bars, all cultural institutions closed. Masks mandatory. When will this madness end? No wonder people are unhappy. Covid or not covid, Omicron or not, this is no way to live.

Hi ZENO

technically Chiang Rai is supposed to be in a soft lockdown, but people have had enough, and in typical Thai fashion they are just ignoring the decrees handed down, and opening the bars and clubs up anyway. One of the decrees is to check everyone’s vaccine status coming into your bar/restaurant(supposed to be implemented on 15 Jan) - that one is a real knee-slapper because it won’t last around here - impossible to enforce. Only liberal democracies have the police state apparatus to implement police state tactics to enforce police state decrees.

And also a more compliant population (although that is slowly changing, as frustration grows). But most people in the West still appear to believe in "boosters" and "lockdowna" and that Mommy Government is right, because, what is the alternative? To discover that almost everything we are told from cradle to grave is a lie? This is too much for many people to handle. "You can't handle the truth", as Jack Nicholson said.

By the way, what bug is that in the picture? A locust? I know in Vietnam it would probably be eaten (fried) - or so a friend tells me, but in Namibia, I'm not sure. :D :P
