The case of photographing Japanese people posing for other photographs I was thinking of was actually also from Wenders’ Tokyo-Ga. The child is looking at Linh outside the act of posing, or posing for Linh’s photograph instead, by Shri Swami Narayan’s grace intuiting Linh’s gift for paternal rebellion, absorbing it passively while either returning his eyes to his family’s photographer or not. The visitor’s photographic gaze into the temple is limited to this ‘family photo area’ so angling the camera to the left of the ‘photo area’ is necessary to reproduce something of the stanze through the windows, inspiring from Linh a recollection of Siena Cathedral.
