Woman leaving flowers at Con Dao's first mass grave. In 1862, Vietnamese prisoners and Viet soldiers in the French army revolted. Though succeeding, they had no way of getting back to the mainland. Two weeks later, a fresh French contingent arrived. After 13 days, they killed 100 rebels. The 20 captured were also buried here, alive. Later this site was used to raise cattle, with their manure used to torture prisoners. Women were also locked up here.
