US wants to get rid of Russia naval base in Mediterranean Sea

Washington’s main reason for toppling the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is to “get rid of Russian naval base” in the Mediterranean Sea, political analyst Linh Dinh told Press TV.

“Unable to dislodge Assad, the US is now talking about a no-fly zone. The US is reluctant to bring in troops for several reasons. The American public doesn’t support an invasion of Syria. Syria does not threaten the US in any way, so it makes no sense to send in American troops”, he said in a phone interview on Tuesday.

“Another reason is Russia. Russia is an ally of Syria, and has a naval base there, its only naval base in the Mediterranean Sea. This is also one of the real reasons the US has been trying to get rid of Assad, so it can get rid of this Russian naval base”, he added.

The analyst made the comments after US Army General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Monday that imposing a no-fly zone against Syria would cost the United States one billion dollars a month.

“The US is now talking about a no-fly zone, but this is also a costly proposition, and American planes can be shot down by Syrian anti-aircraft system”, Linh Dinh said.

“When the US decided to attack Syria two years ago, it never expected the war to last this long, but Assad’s troops are stronger than all of these rebels supported by Washington”, he said.

“Many of these rebels are actually foreign troops, so they shouldn’t be called rebels at all, but foreign invaders. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Israel are also behind these invaders, and Israel has also bombed Syria”, he explained.

“Syria is proving to be much, much stronger than Libya. It appears that the US is willing to let this war drag on for several more years, so American supported war crimes will continue. This Syrian conflict, which is entirely orchestrated by Washington and Israel, has already cost more than 100,000 lives, most of them civilians”, the analyst concluded.
