War-memorial--Bordentown-2

War-memorial--Bordentown

In Bordentown, the war memorial contains the names of all local soldiers going back to the Revolutionary War, with those killed in action distinguished by gold lettering. Yesterday, I chanced upon a television station interviewing the father of Benjamin Moore, who had lost his life in Afghanistan in 2011. The father wants to have the Honor and Remember flag at this memorial, but the local Veterans Association is objecting to this. They say three flags are enough. These are the national, state of New Jersey and POW/MIA flags.

The father said that his son joined the Army in response to 9/11, that he had always wanted to serve his country and is a true American hero. He thought his son's chance of dying was slim, since the US casualty rates in Afghanistan was not that high. After eight months, his son came home on leave, so with only three months left in Afghanistan, the father felt even better about his son's chance of survival. After dinner one evening, two uniformed soldiers rang his bell, and when the father saw them and heard the terrible news, he just wanted to run, he said.
