Police: Man Impaled By Rebar During Robbery In Ogontz
A Philadelphia man is fighting for his life after being impaled during a robbery in the Ogontz section of the city.
Now police are looking for the men responsible.
An ominous warning of yellow tape stretches around the perimeter of a SEPTA construction site on the 5700 block of North Broad Street.
Police said at least three men chased a 38-year-old there, robbed him and then pushed him into the pit just after midnight.
He landed onto the rebar, and was impaled through his stomach.
Witnesses watched as emergency crews responded.
"I seen them grabbing somebody and it looked like he was knocked out,” John Byarm said.
The victim was taken to Einstein Hospital and went into surgery.
Investigators said it's unclear what was stolen from the man's pockets.
The suspects ran away, north on Broad Street.
"Why would someone do that to a person?” Caira Byrd asked.
"Because they have no heart. It's getting worse, like I said they're ruthless,” Pauleen Simmons said.
"That's not cool. That's not cool to me at all,” Martin Robinson said.
Derrick Turner said he was cut by a circular saw recently and can relate to how the victim feels.
"Excruciating pain, excruciating. To have a metal rod poke you inside and impale you, I wouldn't wish that on nobody,” he said.
