Behind me was an abandoned house, one of hundreds in Camden. Right after three young men, two white and one black, ducked into it, a cop car pulled up. "Yo!" the cop yelled as he jumped out and ran to the hole in the wall to block their exit. After he talked to them for about five minutes, he let them all out, however. Had they anything incriminating on them, plus a weapon or two, things could turn out differently.

Schools had just let out. Here and there, kids were walking home.
