Hearing đàn bầu for the first time, Canadian Gale Marie felt right at home,

so she suspects she may have been Vietnamese in a previous life. More amazingly, her singing in Vietnamese is so soulful, word by word, that Vietnamese are left speechless, and Marie has never even been to Vietnam or lived among Vietnamese. When I played this for two Vung Tau friends, they said if they closed their eyes, they would never guess it was a non Vietnamese singing. They also noticed Marie's very subtle, and amazingly correct, pronunciation of the southern "v." Though "v" is converted to "y" in southern Vietnam, it's also preceded by a nearly inaudible "b." "Viet," then, becomes "b-yiet." Though most Vietnamese outside the south don't even hear this glancing "b," Marie has incorporated it perfectly. Not only that, her mannerism is very Vietnamese, my friends pointed out.

The only thing I know for sure is that her English is perfect. The hardest thing to perfect in a foreign language is the accent and all the inflections that go with it - in fact, it is mostly impossible for second language learners(try pronouncing the word for ‘snake’ in Thai). That’s what makes this lady quite amazing - she rally nailed it.
