Watch this and weep. It's the John Coltrane Quartet performing "My
Favorite Things" in Comblain-La-Tour, Belgium in 1966. As in the album,
McCoy Tyner is a magnificent co-star, with this version even more
mind-blowing:
Coltrane set the stage for others to shine. Performing the same song in Tokyo, also in 1966, Coltrane allowed bassist Jimmy Garrison to begin it with a 15-minute solo:
Listening to these on a headphone outside Lankham, I had to stop
before I started bawling like a baby. So tragic, our cultural collapse.

In the days of my youth, I spent a lot of time learning to play piano, this song
was one I played (original movie sound track version) but after hearing John Coltraine
on the radio play when it was first released, I stopped playing it.
Truely amazing, a silence filled the room, people stopped eating to listen.
But there are those who would say that Jazz was one of the signs of a culture
in decline.
