Lived in New York City most of my adult life. Loved the city for its streets, parks, people, culture and the arts. Two years stranded in the world and managed to come back in early 2021, I barely recognized the place even though while homesick abroad I dreamed of going back every time I happened to listen to Arthur's Theme ... "If you get caught between the moon and New York City ..." People lost their faces to the masks, fear and loathing weighed heavily in your heart while riding the subway, sick of looking in the New York Post every morning for fear of reading more bad news. Now escaped, and have promised myself: I am not coming back. I have lost MY New York City. Can I keep the promise?
Ah yes, the smell of fresh piss in the morning, junkies, psychotic homeless people mumbling to themselves or screaming at the sky, and now, as a bonus, random attacks on asian people. I've visited but, mercifully, I've never had to live there.
