Drunk from partying on his birthday, Jemery Washington and his half-brother, Noah King, broke into a parked car at 3:30AM. Both were shot multiple times by its owner, Mark Maurice Williams, but King survived. Williams would be given a six-year-sentence. In 2008, there were 52 homicides in Gary, second highest per capita in the country, after only New Orleans.
