As I was photographing this, a man of about 45 came up to chat. A North Carolina native, Franco was unemployed more than a year ago, so he came North to look for work. After stopping in Richmond, Atlantic City and New York, he finally arrived in Philadelphia. Philly somehow felt right, but Franco had to apply at over a hundred restaurants before he was finally hired, a month ago, by Superior, a pasta company.
"Franco, is that Italian?"
"No, I'm actually Scottish."
"But maybe they thought you were Italian," I laughed, "and hired you because of your name."
"Yeah, I think my name did help."
Franco makes $10 an hour, not much but it's something in this crappy economy. He said he'll vote for Romney "because I don't want the next four years to be the same as the last four." I did suggest that they're both crooks, but Franco said he still wanted to give Romney a chance.
