Born in Trinidad, he came here as a child. At 19, he got his girlfriend pregnant, so he married her, and became stepdad to a son she already had. The next year, she got pregnant again. When he was away in the Army, she cheated on him, and even moved away from the apartment. After he tracked her down, she had him beaten by three men, hence this "SEIZURE DISORDER" sticker on his cap. Though he was in the hospital for six days, he didn't press charges, since he didn't want his wife to go to jail. After that incident, he would not see his two daughters for 16 years.
Describing his decision to marry, he said, "She was living with her mother, you see, so I had to help her get away from that point of restriction."

The committed marital love of this man is heartbreaking. Marriage is very costly. Reminds me of the Hebrew prophet Hosea who stayed married to a prostitute. What self sacrifice.

To make sure I'd not forget what I heard, I rushed a bit to get this down. After that incident, he never saw his wife again, and only reunited with his daughters 16 years later. They grew up thinking another man was their real dad. One of his daughters has since died, and though one is alive, he doesn't talk to her anymore, since all she wants from him is money, not a relationship.
I asked if he ever managed to establish a loving relationship with another woman, and he said, "No."
