Iran's Press TV, 10/4/13:
An activist says the United States has created the National Security Agency to keep Americans “docile, impotent, and afraid.”
“Though many Americans have come to realize the true nature of the NSA, many more need to wake up. They need to see that the NSA has been created to keep Americans docile, impotent and afraid,” political activist Linh Dinh told Press TV on Thursday.
He also called the NSA “a bloated agency that routinely violates American and international laws by spying on everyone, not just people suspected of terrorism.”
“It spies on ordinary citizens to prevent dissension or rebellion, and it spies on politicians to potentially blackmail them. It spies on leaders of friendly countries, such as the presidents of Mexico and Brazil,” he said.
During his interview, the activist also mentioned American whistleblower and former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who leaked US government spying programs.
“As Edward Snowden said recently, “The surveillance of whole populations, rather than individuals, threatens to be the greatest human rights challenge of our time,” and he’s correct because if people are being watched constantly, they will be too intimidated to criticize their out-of-control, criminal government, and this government has so many ways to punish them,” Linh Dinh said.
“By secretly branding someone a terrorist, the government can keep him from flying, and can even arrest, torture or kill him without charge, and in secret too, so no one will know about it. And since Americans have become way too reliant on the internet to stage anything, NSA spying can also be used to thwart organized protest,” he explained.
“The US has 16 different federal spy agencies, so I’m not at all worried about the government shutdown hampering the NSA. In fact, I’m advocating for a permanent shutdown of the NSA. There are too many spies in this Big Brother state,” he said.
