Two examples of what Genpei Akasegawa, a Japanese conceptual artist, would call "tomasons," street or architectural objects or features that have outlived their usefulness. Akasegawa derives "tomason" from Gary Thomasson, a mostly forgotten American baseball player. In 1981, Thomasson signed the biggest contract ever to play in the Nippon League, only to end up as a strike out machine. Lasting just two years, Thomasson had clearly outlived his usefulness.
