Laos-Asian-Market--Scranton-2

Laos Asian Market. A leaking air conditioner over the door rained on my head as I walked in. Inside, boxes lay at odd angles, most items had no price and the floor hadn't been mopped since the end of the Vietnam War. With foreboding, I bought a styrofoam tray of ready-to-eat khao phan. "Is this new?" I asked the lady. Though she said yes, I asked again, "This is from this morning?" Smiling, I stared at her eyes for signs of mirth as she again said yes. It turned out to be pretty good and, at only $3.50, reasonably priced.

Hi Cine,

My khao phan paranoid has a basis. In Vietnamese, it's called banh cuon, and once I bought a tray in Philly, from Ba Le on Washington Avenue, that almost sent me to an emergency room. My stomach had never hurt worse and had I health insurance, I would have gone to a doctor for sure.
