There were a handful of tiny kid rides in front of a cafe. This was in a residential neighborhood in Northwest Istanbul. There were no tourists there. I ate at some tiny place without a menu and, you wouldn't believe this, they refused to charge me. The owner was delighted to see a Vietnamese guy in there. He said, "Japon?"
I said, "Vietnam."
"Holiday?"
"First time. Istanbul is a beautiful city." I grinned.
When I ordered tea, his eleven-year-old waiter son had to run down the street to get it for me.
In Vietnam they do this also. If you order something they don't have, they just run out to get it for you, if it's just down the block.
Thank you for the very nice story about Istanbul good will on this very unseasonably warm Christmas Eve.
For the sake of Carol and her mother Florence, I am now leaving for the traditional "Wigilia" dinner where my sister & brother-in-law and 4-year old grandson Ethan will be present, and I will try to manly deal with whatever authentic "family connection" happens to appear.
