Riot erupts at counter-protest to right-wing rally in eastern Germany
Leipzig (dpa) - Masked left-wing protestors attacked police with stones, bottles and fireworks in the eastern German city of Leipzig on Saturday as they held a counter-protest to a right-wing demonstration held in the south of the city.
The right-wing demonstration in the Suedvorstadt and Connewitz parts of the city had attracted considerably fewer supporters than the 200 predicted by the organizers, police said.
Police, who were on hand in force, used water cannon and tear gas to quell the riot, which erupted from a crowd of around 1,000 counter demonstrators. Police made several arrests and also reported injuries.
Shop windows were smashed, a bus stop vandalized and refuse bins set alight. A container for glass bottle recycling was overturned.
