I met my first husband in a bar called the "It'll Do." It was kind of like a family.

Hi Linda,

Philly is pretty walkable, and there are still many of these corner bars around. Cities that are heavily car-dependent and filled with strip malls don't have these.

A neighborhood bar should be exactly that, right smack in the middle of the neighborhood, and accessible by foot.

Yes, the It'll Do was in a neighborhood between downtown Seattle and the Univ of Washington. Mixed crowd. Reminded me of a Hobbit borough. Someone did ride their motorcycle into the bar one day and there was occasionally some dancing on the bar. :)

In England these are ubiquitous. Usually a person picks one of them and refers to it as his/her 'local'. Going down to the local to down a few was considered a very civilized thing to do. Though much has changed in England, that might still be the case.
