Thanks for sending me an autographed copy of your bookPostcards from the End of America. Also the picture you sent me of the female bartender smoking behind the bar with the inscription on the back entitled "Philadelphia 2017" looks like a movie poster for a great film noir movie. Perhaps you can write the movie script for that one? You would have a singularly unique take on the genre.
The bartender is Lisa Hammer. Lisa no longer works at Friendly. I had a few drinks with her before I left Philly.
I was just a kid in Tacoma, so I never got to experience its watering holes, and it doesn't look like I will ever, a real shame.
Yesterday, I had a few Tigers with Nick Santalucia, a Temple grad who has lived in Vietnam for 4 1/2 years. Next month, Nick will return to Philly. Although he has a very bleak assessment of the USA, he thinks the country will turn around, and he wants to be a part of the recovery.
If not, Nick can always return to Vietnam. "But you will have to learn the language," I said. "Of course, it won't be easy."
Sitting next to me was a 65-year-old man. He said, "Why didn't you bring him to a better place? This joint is very low class!"
Nick felt right at home, though, and of course, so did I.
