Hoang Anh Tuong was a Tai strongman in this area, and he made his fortune primarily from opium. He certainly had excellent taste, for his residence is one of the most elegant in Vietnam. Completed in 1921, it's the work of a French and a Chinese architect. Although it's in sad shape, and all of its furnishing is gone, it has a striking presence from afar and up-close.
