Drago at his store on 1-27-22--Windhoek copy

Sixty-two-year-old Antonio, real name Dragan, at his shop. He's been in Africa 30 years. Escaping the Yugoslav War, Dragan drifted through 17 countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Thailand, South Africa, Angola, Uganda and Zambia, before settling in Namibia, where he's lived for 15 years. "Namibia is the best." With this business selling CDs, T-shirts, key chains and, now, face masks, he's managed to buy a house and three cars, plus open three more shops in other towns.

With relatives in Santa Ana, California, Drago applied for an American visa three times to visit them and see the country, but was turned down each time. Politically, he's far left, so despises American imperialism. Among the T-shirts Dragan sells are those depicting Castro, Chavez, Lumumba, Lenin or Stalin, but he's also something of a pan-Slav, so is a huge fan of Putin. The threatened war between Russia and the Ukraine distresses him deeply. "They're my people."
