The Italian artist Francesco Clemente kept a studio in Madras for many years. He was obviously inspired by images such as this. Arriving in Chennai, I thought about writing an article titled "Clemente's Madras, My Chennai," but it never got off the ground. I saw his retrospective in Philadelphia in 1990, and also heard him being interviewed in an auditorium.
