As her husband and son wait, a woman buys gold. Like all Orientals, Cambodians trust gold to store their wealth. Since most people in Stung Treng can't afford 24K gold, they settle for 18K, 14K or even 9K, and they prefer to wear it as a necklace, bracelet or even anklet. In tiny Stung Treng, there are at least two dozen stores selling gold jewelry.

The gold JEWellery that is sold in these shops is only gold plated items, they call it
"platin" without knowing what that means. The actual amount of gold used is very small,
and bears little relevence to the actual price of gold as far as a store of wealth goes.
Majority of the rural populace borrow money to buy this crap to show off for family
gatherings on the many holiday get togethers, weddings, funerals etc. then sell it
back to the shop at a small loss, but still have to pay back the loan at userous
interest rates.
Hi lyle,
A Khmer Krom woman I talked to sneered that much of these "gold" items would be considered less than garbage in Saigon.
