Memorial marker for Vietnamese man at Hongkhayom Temple on 4-18-23--Pakse copy

MISTER
NGUYỄN VĂN NHIỂU
DECEASED 10.11.1970

TỪ TRẦN literally means to say goodbye to this mortal life [辭 塵]

No birthdate or place is given. Even more unusual, this marker is embedded into the entrance arch of Hongkhayom Temple, so there's no body. Normally, a Buddhist grave in Laos is an often elaborate stupa.

The oddest Vietnamese grave I've seen in Laos was in Luang Prabang. It had no birthplace, birth date or even date of death. The deceased didn't even have a proper name, only the colloquial MRS FAT FIVE [BÀ NĂM MẬP], meaning she was fat and the fourth child in her family.
