Water spinach, ribs, cucumber and rice for $2.63 at Liên Hương, a Vietnamese restaurant. A glass of iced tea was free. Owner is a man in his 70's born in Dong Nai. His sister married a Vietnamese Lao, so he followed her to Paske in 1989.
His parents were from Nam Dinh, so that's his ancestral home. Since that's my father's native province, I'm also sort of a Nam Dinh person.
First, his parents went to Cẩm Phả, where his father worked in a coal mine, then they went to Dong Nai in 1943. Before Covid, he returned to Dong Nai twice a year, but he hasn't been back since Covid started.
Until recently, it took more than 20 hours to reach Dong Nai. Now, just ten, but it's still a long ride. He does miss Vietnam but, interestingly, after two weeks or so in Dong Nai, he misses Pakse.
