US media silent as CIA drones kill Yemenis

The American mainstream media remain largely silent as the CIA is pounding Yemen with drone strikes killing at least 49 people in two weeks, says political analyst and writer Linh Dinh from Philadelphia.

“Under the cover of the 'War on Terror', the US has been very busy killing many Yemenis by drones, 49 in the last two weeks alone, but these deaths are thoroughly ignored by the American media,” Dinh told Press TV on Saturday.

“As in Pakistan, drone strikes in Yemen routinely kill civilians, even infants,” he added.

President Barack Obama has authorized 12 drone strikes in Yemen since the US intelligence community claimed it had intercepted “chatter” between senior al-Qaeda leaders indicating a major attack this month. The “threat” that led to the closure of 21 American embassies and consulates across the Middle East and North Africa was alleged to have been emanated from Yemen.

However US officials have said the deadly strikes, which began on July 27, were not retaliatory, and so far have not eliminated the threat.

While officials said “at least 14” of the dead were probably militants, none of them were named.

According to the locals, the unmanned aircraft targeted civilian areas and the victims have been mostly civilians.

“As for the 'War on Terror', each innocent Muslim killed only creates more enemies for the US, feeding the so-called 'War on Terror', but this is also fine with the US, since the US doesn’t want the War on Terror to end, for there’s a lot of money to be made in this 'War on Terror',” Dinh noted.

The United Nations has called the US drone attacks targeted killings that flout international law.
