Seeing this oddly empty and rather desolate Fujianese temple, I strongly suspect it has been looted, with its statues taken away and sold. Communists do that. Visiting a 400-year-old Buddhist temple in northern Vietnam 20 years ago, I was told by the nun, in a hushed yet bitter voice, that its 1,000 armed Buddha was a fake, with the original sold to a Taiwanese collector.

The main impetus for collecting Catalan Romanesque from chapels into a central museum was priests selling to collectors, not so much anarchists. Mao obviously destroyed many temples.
