Bo la lot for lunch on 4-15-22--Vung Tau copy

Today's $2.15 lunch. This is bò nướng lá lốt, or grilled beef in lolot leaves. Vietnamese cuisine has to be one of the most sophisticated, or fussiest, on earth. If one or two ingredients are missing here, every Vietnamese will know it. The meat is ground beef mixed with ground pork, to give it extra fat. It is seasoned with fish sauce, sugar, pepper and, unfortunately, usually MSG. Wrapped in lolot leaves, the rolls are grilled over a charcoal fire. Sprinkled with peanuts, each roll is then wrapped at the table in rice paper with rice vermicelli, lettuce, heartleaves, raw plaintain, cucumber and carambola, with mint leaves optional. The dipping sauce is shrimp paste with lime and pineapple, with crushed hot pepper optional. After I took this photo, the proprietor also brought out some dried lemongrass.
