Hakhuot Angkor on 11-20-22--Siem Reap copy

One more day at Hakhuot Angkor, then a long bus ride to Bangkok, from where I'll fly to Bangalore on Sunday. I'm featured at the Asia Pacific Writers and Translators annual event. Done, I'll go somewhere to get a new American passport plus, hopefully, a five-year visa exemption for Vietnam. I must deal with all that before returning to Vung Tau. Just two months ago, my life had become too simple.

Hi S.

Outside the US, you can get a one-year visa in a day or a regular, ten-year visa in about a month. The first is necessary for emergencies, such as people who have had their passports stolen. This happened to me in Berlin in 2016.

Vietnam embassy was nice in Bangkok, just $10 to get a 5 year VISA exemption... no bribes, no funny games. I too went through a passport renewal recently whilst living in Vietnam. Vietnam government wanted $400 to grant me a new 5 year visa. best to do outside of the country of course. Any Vietnam embassy outside of Vietnam should be able to do it for $10.

my passport came back 5 days later in Vietnam, I was shocked how fast the turnaround was. the USA embassy in Vietnam works lightning fast. I may never go back to America again to be frank. life in Vietnam is too simple and no stress :D
