Very interesting - I was a nurse (long since retired) and never encountered this - during clinical rotations we students were simply put into the space where serious injuries were treated - our instructors kept a close eye on us to catch the fainters - the surgery interns spent a full-time immersion week in the ER and the ones who could handle it went on from there to continue their studies. On the job training!
