Iran's Press TV, 11/27/13:
Washington’s decision to send two bombers over China’s newly-declared air defense zone would be retaliated by the Chinese government, an analyst says.
“China can and will retaliate, however, and not necessarily militarily. As the country that lends the US the most money, it has a lot of economic leverage. It can sabotage the US economically,” Linh Dinh told Press TV on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the United States flew two B-52 bombers over disputed islands in the East China Sea to challenge China’s Air Defense Identification Zone.
“This blatant provocation by the US has escalated tension considerably, and the US is clearly relishing China’s failure to react. It’s calling China’s bluff, in short,” Dinh said.
The analyst also called China’s declaration a “highly unusual move.”
It is “not something a normal country would do, but then China is not an ordinary country but a rising global power. It is reacting to provocation from the United States, a declining power,” Dinh added.
He also noted that the rhetoric between the US and China “may erupt into open warfare.”
“The US has brought warships and planes close to China’s borders for decades. An equivalent situation would be for Chinese warships to patrol the coast of California. Interestingly, Chinese submarines were spotted near Hawaii recently,” Dinh said.
“The United States' behavior in this dispute is consistent with its policy to encircle China and to stoke conflict in the region, for the United States profits from a war anywhere, and it needs tension in Asia to stay relevant in Asia, so it can come in and act as a counterbalance to China,” he added.
