About 15 minutes after this, I ran into a black woman in her early 40's. Knitting, she was completely cocooned in plastic. It was freezing. I asked to take her photo, but she refused. Her speech was measured and concise, and her demeanor serene. Months on the streets had obviously taken their toll on her mental clarity, however, for she talked of being monitored by "them," an unnamed group of people who had even arranged to have her foot run over by a cart, and commanded that she go to Camden from Manhattan.

Leaving her, I finally reached the Walter Rand Transportation Center at around 12:25AM. Inside, there were at least a dozen people taking refuge, with some sleeping while sitting on the floor, with their backs against a wall.
