Even in Africa, stereotypical images are used to represent Africa, so no modern cities, slums, rappers or soccer stars, etc. This is also common everywhere else, however.
If it's an atavistic embrace, here's a much more interesting example, a music video by the Ghanian Jay Bahd, with Skyface, Reggie, Kwaku DMC, City Boy, Kawabanga and O'Kenneth:
They're all from Kumasi, by the way, the heart of Ashanti culture. Its cool, subcultural name, though, is Kumerica!

god i hate rap
Ersatz Copycats: The same menacing, "I don't give a f*uck," attitude. The same talk-"singing." The same juvenile narcissism of playing the tough guy by jumping around to a beat while brandishing weapons and making murderous threats (although these Africans use spears and knives [apparently they can't get their hands on guns like their American cousins]).
Clearly, Gangsta Rap appeals across the world to those with similar intellectual/emotional IQ's and maturity levels.
