Foreigners talk about difficulties in learning Vietnamese:
Their Vietnamese is pretty good, with the Laotians' just about perfect. The black New Yorker is very good. The Swiss woman jokes at the beginning that whenever she tells Vietnamese she can't quite understand, they don't speak slower or clearer, only louder! She also jokes that she no longer says, "I don't understand," but "Hah?! Say what?!"

That reminds me of an old Brittish televsion series from the fifties, Biggles.
Biggles had to fly across to the "Continent", when asked how he'd get on not speaking
European languages he replied, "I just keep repeating what I say louder and louder each time."
Asked if then do they understand, he replied "Oh yes they certainly do"
