There's no French designer who introduced the ao dai to anybody. The dress evolved over centuries.

Yes, to clarify, a French trained fashion designer, whose french
Name was Le Mur,(Cat Tuong) who in 1930 fused elements of the
Southern Ao Dai with the Northern Ao Ngu to give the garment a
Much wider appeal. In effect created something new out of the old
And became very popular because of those changes.

Nguyen Cat Toung was a Vietnamese. He did combine the northern and southern design with some western influence. Regardless he was a Vietnamese and attended the Indochinese Fine Arts University in Hanoi. BTW, Toung means le mur in French, the wall. His nickname was Lemur.

A small correction. It's "Tường," with u before o. As you said, it means "wall."
